Terms of Service
Last updated: July 14, 2026
These terms govern your use of Chess Lab. By creating an account or using the service, you agree to them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use Chess Lab.
The service
Chess Lab is a study tool for finished games: it reviews games you’ve already played, explains your moves, and trains openings, tactics, and endgames.
How the analysis and lessons are produced (AI & automation)
We want to be transparent about how Chess Lab generates what you see:
- Position analysis comes from the open-source Stockfish chess engine and, for endgames, public endgame tablebases.
- Move explanations are produced by an automated, rule-based system that derives its wording from the engine’s evaluation and the position on the board. They are not written by a human for each move.
- Course and puzzle content was prepared with the assistance of AI tools and reviewed by us before publishing.
Automated analysis and lessons are study aids and can be wrong or incomplete — they are informational, not professional advice or a guarantee of any result. Use your own judgment.
Acceptable use
Chess Lab is for post-game analysis and training only. You agree not to use it for assistance during a live or ongoing game on any platform, or in any way that violates the fair-play rules of Chess.com, Lichess, or another chess service. You also agree not to abuse, disrupt, or attempt to gain unauthorized access to the service, and to only import games you have the right to use.
Your account
You’re responsible for keeping your login credentials secure and for activity under your account. You can delete your account at any time from your Account page.
Age requirement
You must be at least 13 years old to use Chess Lab. If you are under the age of majority where you live, you may use it only with the involvement of a parent or guardian. Chess Lab is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information; if you believe a child under 13 has created an account, contact us via Support and we will remove it.
Subscriptions & billing
Chess Lab is free to start. Chess Lab Pro is an optional paid subscription at $9.99/month or $79.99/year, billed through Stripe.
- Free trial. New subscribers get a 7-day free trial. A payment method is required to start it, but you are not charged during the trial. If you don’t cancel before the trial ends, your plan begins and the card is charged.
- Auto-renewal. Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period (monthly or yearly) at the then-current price, until you cancel.
- Cancel anytime. You can cancel from the billing portal (Manage billing on your Account page). Access continues until the end of the period you’ve already paid for.
Refunds
You can cancel at any time and won’t be charged again. Cancel before the trial ends and you pay nothing. After a paid period begins, payments are non-refundable, including for partial billing periods — you keep access through the end of the period you paid for. This does not affect any rights you have under applicable consumer law.
In-app currency & cosmetics
Chess Lab includes a virtual currency you earn through play, used for cosmetic items and course unlocks. It has no real-world cash value, cannot be purchased with real money, transferred, or redeemed for cash, and is forfeited if your account is closed.
Intellectual property
Chess Lab and its content — the software, course material, puzzles, explanations, and branding — belong to us or our licensors and are protected by law. We grant you a personal, non-transferable licence to use the service for your own study; you may not copy, resell, scrape, or redistribute the content. The games you import and the notes you create remain yours; you grant us only the permission needed to store and process them so we can provide the service to you.
Disclaimer & limitation of liability
Chess Lab is provided “as is” without warranties of any kind. Engine evaluations and lessons are aids to study, not guarantees of results. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, and our total liability is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim.
Dispute resolution & arbitration
Please read this carefully — it affects your legal rights. It requires most disputes to be resolved by individual arbitration instead of in court and waives class actions.
- Talk to us first. Before starting arbitration, contact us through Support and give us 30 days to try to resolve the dispute informally.
- Binding individual arbitration. If we can’t resolve it, any dispute arising out of or relating to these terms or Chess Lab will be settled by binding arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association under its Consumer Arbitration Rules, on an individual basis — not in court and not as a class or representative action. Either of us may still bring an individual claim in small-claims court.
- Class-action & jury waiver. You and we waive any right to a jury trial and to bring or join a class, collective, consolidated, or representative action. If the class-action waiver is found unenforceable for a particular claim, only that claim proceeds in court.
- 30-day opt-out. You may opt out of this arbitration agreement within 30 days of first accepting these terms by contacting us through Support with your account email and a clear statement that you opt out. If you opt out, the governing-law section below applies to disputes instead. This section survives termination of your account.
Governing law
Except as the arbitration section provides, these terms are governed by the laws of the State of Mississippi, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, and the state and federal courts located there have jurisdiction over any dispute not subject to arbitration. Nothing here limits any non-waivable rights you have under the consumer-protection laws of the place you live.
Changes
We may update these terms as the product evolves; material changes will be reflected by the “Last updated” date above. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated terms.
